This is the question our Rangers get asked most, so here it is plainly.
Under the Shire's Firebreak and Fuel Hazard Reduction Notice, your firebreak needs to be:
- 3m wide and cleared to 4m high
- Trafficable - a fire truck has to be able to drive it. That means no stumps, no washouts, no low branches, no gates too narrow to get through
- Located PERIMETER RULE
- In place from 15 November 2026
"Trafficable" is the word that catches people out. A line mowed through the grass isn't a firebreak if a truck can't physically use it. Walk yours and ask honestly: could a 4WD appliance get around here in the dark, in smoke, in a hurry?
