 Date: Monday, 18 August 2025

Time: 6.00 pm

Format: Online (registration link and joining details provided upon registration)

This session will provide an overview of:

  • The local government election process
  • The roles and responsibilities of council members
  • The regulatory role of LGIRS in Western Australia

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the session or follow up via email afterwards. A recording will also be made available.

What does a Councillor actually do?

Make decisions for the community: Councillors make important decisions on behalf of the community, overseeing the delivery of local services, development regulation, managing public resources, and establishing strategic direction to address community needs and priorities

Represent residents: Councillors listen to the views and concerns of the community and bring these perspectives to council discussions

Set strategic direction: Councillors contribute to planning and setting long-term goals for the local government

Attend meetings: Councillors regularly participate in council and committee meetings to deliberate and make decisions.

What you can expect as a Councillor:

Training and support: A comprehensive induction and ongoing training is provided to help new councillors understand their role and council procedures.

Time commitment: The role requires attending meetings (often in the evenings) and engaging with the community.

Making a difference: As a councillor, you play a key role in shaping important decisions that influence the future direction of the Shire.

Collaboration and accountability: Councillors work together to make informed decisions and are expected to uphold legal and ethical standards, act with integrity and in the best interests of the community.
