Important Update: H5 Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) – Western Australia

While the only two confirmed cases in Western Australia have been in Esperance, we are sharing the latest information from the State Government to help keep our community informed and prepared.

What you should know

  • What is H5 bird flu?
  • It is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects birds but can also infect other animals, such as marine mammals. The risk to humans remains low.
  • How does it spread?
  • The virus can spread to other regions through the movement of migratory birds.
What to do if you find dead birds or animals
If you find multiple dead birds or other animals, do not touch them. Instead:
  • Take photos or a short video
  • Record your location
  • Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline – 1800 675 888
If you keep backyard birds or poultry
You can help reduce risk by:
  • Keeping wild birds away using netting or secure enclosures
  • Ensuring feed and water are not accessible to wild birds
  • Maintaining good hygiene in aviaries and equipment
  • Keeping pets away from wildlife (e.g. cats contained and dogs on lead in wildlife areas)
