The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes Council has adopted a number of recommendations arising from an independent operational review of the Bridgetown Leisure Centre, following extensive community consultation undertaken earlier this year.
The review was commissioned to assess the Centre's operations, usage, financial performance and long-term sustainability. While the review confirmed the Centre remains a highly valued community asset, it also identified that the increasing operational costs are no longer financially sustainable for a local government of the Shire's size.
Following consideration of the review findings and feedback received from the community, Council has endorsed a range of measures aimed at creating a more sustainable operating model while ensuring the Centre continues to provide important recreation and leisure opportunities for residents.
As part of the adopted recommendations, the Shire will explore a range of initiatives, including:
- Expanding user group access to the Centre outside staffed hours through a swipe card access system;
- Working more closely with user groups to support shared responsibility for some facility operations;
- Reviewing memberships, fitness programs and service delivery arrangements;
- Further reviewing fees and charges to reduce barriers to participation; and
- Improving operational efficiency, including staffing levels, while maintaining safety and service standards.
Current bookings, programs and activities will continue as normal while the recommendations are progressively implemented.
The Shire will continue engaging with user groups and the broader community as it works through the next phase of planning and implementation.
