Bushfire safety Reminder

Western Australian communities regularly face the threat of numerous hazards including bushfire. The evacuation of people and/or animals from an area affected by a hazard is one of the strategies that MAY be employed by emergency management agencies to mitigate the potential loss of, or harm to, life. This is consistent with the State’s core objective to “protect the lives and wellbeing of persons”.

The Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes has identified several facilities in the Shire that can be used if required. It is important to remember a few things about this though. Please do not self evacuate immediately to one of our Shire centres and expect it to be set up and equipped to receive you. This is not how it works.

  • It is unlikely that the Shire evacuation centres will be activated as a result of an incident/hazard in our Shire – generally if our community is affected by a hazard, such as fire, we will not use our own centres and instead people are likely to be sent to nearby towns and use their evacuation centres. Our evacuation centres are actually more likely to be used by other Shire’s residents rather than ours.
  • These centres are only activated by the Incident Controller. Staff and equipment need to be put in place to activate these centres and as such, if you self evacuate to one of these centres without it being activated there will be no one there to help you and in fact you may inadvertently hinder emergency services.
  • Official information on evacuations and evacuation centres can be found in several places during an incident
  • Information from other sources including Facebook Community Pages should not be used as a reliable source of information. This information is generally not authorised by the Incident Controller and can often be unintentionally inaccurate.

The takeaway message is look to official sources for information on who needs to evacuate, when they need to evacuate and where they need to evacuate to.
