The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes is proud to announce the newest acquisition into the Shire Art Collection: Whitegum Lift-off, a powerful hand-coloured linoprint by local artist Christine Latham.
This artwork was selected from the recent People & Places: Landscapes Art Awards, where it was recognised for its emotional depth and connection to the natural landscape. Christine was born and has lived her life on Noongar Country, later discovering her Badimia/Yamatji ancestry at the age of 35. Her journey of reconnecting with culture and Country is deeply reflected in her art.
Whitegum Lift-off was inspired by Christine’s encounters with flocks of Curlews (Weerlo) and Magpies (Koolbardi) among Wandoo trees—first at Walgadiny (Dryandra Woodland), and later at the Wandoo Valley Walk east of Bridgetown. “Weerlo signify death and hope. Koolbardi often symbolise protection and provision,” she explains.
Using symbolic imagery, repetition, and expressive colour, Christine invites viewers into her personal journey and encourages a deeper, more empathetic understanding of the importance of caring for Country.
Whitegum Lift-off is now on display in the Station Masters Gallery at the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Visitor Centre, alongside other works from the Shire Art Collection.
