Travelling Safely in Bushfire Season

Published on Monday, 21 December 2020 at 12:33:31 PM

It’s the time of year when a lot of us like to go camping. If you plan to travel in bushfire season it could prove vital to know what to do if you encounter a bushfire. Key considerations include:

  • Understanding what to do if you encounter a bushfire while travelling or staying near bushland;
  • Knowing the current fire danger rating for the area you are travelling;
  • Finding out if there is a total fire ban in the area you are travelling;
  • Knowing how to stay up to date with the latest bushfire information

DFES have a designated webpage ‘Travelling During Bushfire Season’ which you can visit here.

We all enjoy an open campfire as part of the camping experience, but they can easily cause a bushfire if you haven’t built, or extinguished, them correctly.  It is prohibited at certain times to light outside fires. DFES have a Campfire Safety section on their webpage which provides simple tips to stay safe when camping including:

  • What to do before you light a fire including checking the Local Governments Prohibited Burning Periods and if there is a Total Fire Ban declared;
  • Looking after your campfire; and
  • Putting your campfire out.

We encourage everyone to stay safe, and keep others safe, by being familiar with resources and tips during the bushfire season and holiday period.
