In 2023, the Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes embarked on a significant enhancement project at the Bridgetown Sports Ground, made possible by the generous support of Talison Lithium, the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries (DLGSC), and the Commonwealth Government. Each of these partners contributed $170,494.00 towards the improvements, which included:

  • A new engineered drainage system to address the subsurface issues caused by clay soil.
  • A fully automated irrigation and pumping system, equipped with remote central control and weather sensing capabilities.
  • New 75 lux LED sports lighting.

Additionally, Talison Lithium contributed an extra $154,600, and the Commonwealth Government provided an additional $85,000 for the construction of a new 15 million litre lined irrigation dam. This dam will supply fresh irrigation water to the upgraded playing fields.

The culmination of these efforts was celebrated on Thursday, May 23rd, with a special event at the Sportsground. The gathering was attended by distinguished guests, including the Hon. Jane Kelsbie MLA, Shire President Jenny Mountford, Talison Lithium's General Manager of Operations Craig Dawson, as well as sporting team members, Councillors, and Shire officers.

As the full moon rose and official speeches were delivered, the new lights were switched on, brilliantly illuminating the field. This impressive upgrade not only enhances training sessions but also opens up opportunities for future night games, fostering greater community unity and engagement.

The Shire extends its heartfelt thanks to its funding partners for their generous contributions. Special recognition is also given to Adrian Williams, whose expertise in soil and water analysis and his foundational report were instrumental in guiding the project to improve the playing surface.

Finally, the Shire expresses profound gratitude to the Bridgetown Football Club. Beyond being a mere sports club, its members consistently volunteer their time and effort, enriching the social and physical fabric of the community. Their dedication has been invaluable.
