The Greenbushes Railway Station opened in 1898 as part of the Donnybrook to Bridgetown Railway line and remained open to passenger rail until 1985. In 2003 an effort to clean and restore this important historical building, to prolong it's life, was coordinated by the Greenbushes Ratepayers and Residents Association, with support from the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes.
Unfortunately, the building has since continued to deteriorate and although the Station is listed as a Local Heritage Building, the original surrounding buildings, including the Goods Shed and the Station Master's House, no longer exist. In 2012 the Public Transport Authority granted permission for the Station to be relocated. This was an initiative of the Greenbushes Discovery Centre and the community.
The Station will be moved from its North Greenbushes location to behind the Discovery Centre in Greenbushes. This will allow an extension of the historical and cultural interpretation work that the Greenbushes Discovery Centre currently does and repurpose and renew the Railway Station building. This move is a positive one for tourism in Greenbushes and this significant heritage building.
The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes will be providing Project Management Services to facilitate this Project .
A contractor, Nylund House Transporter, has been assigned and it is anticipated that preliminary deconstruction will commence in the week starting Monday 6th November 2023. Relocation of the railway station is due to be finished by the end of November/early December this year.
