Funding received for Bushfire Mitigation Work 2023/24

Earlier this week Emergency Services Minister announced $5.7 million to strengthen WA's bushfire preparedness via the Mitigation Activity Fund (MAF).

Since its inception in 2017, the MAF grant program has distributed more than $48 million to local governments throughout WA to fund more 6,200 mitigation activities.

As we have seen in recent times, Bushfires can have devastating consequences. Mitigation efforts aim to minimize these impacts by implementing various strategies and measures to prevent, control, or manage the occurrence and spread of bushfires.

The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes has been allocated $221,568.00 which enables us to carry out the following Bushfire Mitigation Works in 2023/24.

Prescribed Burns:

  • Provide strategic areas of reduced fuel, create an Asset Protection Zone for assets and infrastructure reducing the rate and intensity of spread of bushfires.
  • Improve the likely success of parallel attack and indirect attack suppression strategies in high to very high weather conditions.
  • Reduce the likelihood of crown fires developing and spot fire ignition potential, reducing the wick effect during a bushfire.
  • Undertake slow, low intensity mosaic burning to reduce the likelihood of fires spreading.

Mechanical Works:

  • To meet relevant land management objectives by reducing surface, near surface and elevated fuel load levels.
  • Clear and mulch vegetation to reduce elevated fuels to a compacted state.
  • Create and/or maintain fire breaks in Shire reserves.
  • Creates a Hazard Separation Zone, protecting assets and infrastructure, reducing the rate, intensity and the likelihood of fires spreading.

Chemical Works:

  • Spray out the elevated & woody weeds during the Spring & Autumn months to help reduce the build-up of highly flammable material in the high threat summer months.
  • In addition, spray locations where Mechanical Works have previously been conducted.
  • Maintain fire breaks in Shire reserves.
  • Target non-native plants and grasses.
