Tidy Towns 2020

The WA Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards were announced in Perth on Friday 27 November.

It was exciting to see Bridgetown and Greenbushes groups and individuals nominated in the various categories. Greenbushes was a finalist in the State Finalist category, unfortunately missing out to Narrogin for the win.

The Blackwood Youth Action: Youth Advisory Group and Heidi Rodgers from Greenbushes were nominated for their respective towns in the Young Legends category. This award category recognizes achievements of groups and individuals who have contributed to the sustainability of their community.  It was great to see both our nominations get through as finalists.  The competition in this category was impressive and it was wonderful to see so many young people contributing to their communities across WA.  The winner was Bridget Mason from Albany.

The Greenbushes CRC was nominated, and made it through to the finals in a new award category this year.  The Community Action COVID Category was developed to acknowledge the initiatives taken to care for and connect community members during the pandemic.  The winner of this Category on the day was Corrigin.  Ten people from our Shire travelled up to be present at the awards ceremony and we are already looking forward to seeing who, and what projects, will be nominated in 2021.

This year we also signed an “Adopt a Spot” agreement with Keep Australia Beautiful WA.  We are the 11th Shire Council in WA to formally enter into an agreement like this.  We are hoping that individuals, community groups, businesses or school communities will embark on a journey with us to ‘adopt a spot’ (or more than one!) throughout the Shire to help improve the environment and tidiness in and of our community.  For more information on the program please contact Seonaid Leslie, Waste and Environmental Officer via sleslie@bridgetown.wa.gov.au.
