Review of the Disability (Access to Buildings) Standards 2010

Published on Wednesday, 7 April 2021 at 8:00:00 AM

The Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources has commenced consultation on the second stage (Part 2) of the Disability (Access to Premises – Building) Standards 2010 (Premises Standards) review.

These Standards help people living with disability, their family, carers and friends have equal access to public buildings. They also make sure building certifiers, developers and managers fulfil their responsibilities to people with disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

The Standards are reviewed every 5 years and:

  • Apply to new public buildings,
  • Could apply to existing buildings such as in the case of new work or renovations,
  • Apply to common areas of apartment buildings, but
  • Do not apply to people’s homes.

The consultation/review period closes on Friday 16 April.  You can contribute by sending a written submission or by completing an online survey here.
