Presidents Report

The elections in October 2007 brought about a significant change in Councillor representation for the Shire with five new councillors being sworn in and later tow more as the result of resignations of serving councillors.  The incoming Councillotrs have adapted well to the responsibilities that membership of council requires.

It is significant to recognise the efforts of the outgoing Councillors, namely Chris Taylor, Derek Dilkes, Chris Cox and Michael Carlton for the work undertaken by them during their term on our Council.  A special mentionj must be made of the work undertaken by the late Rob Walster as Councillor and President of the Shire as well as the numerous comittees and volunteer groups he was a member of.  A tireless worker with a smile and his book of quotes Rob will be remembered with fondness by most.

A number of issues cuaght the attention of Council and residents during the year none the least being the Biomass plant that was proposed for Bridgetown.  Strong public sentiment resulted in the application for the plant being withdrawn by the proponents prior to consideration by Council.

The consideration of the concept plans for the library and administration block have taken longer than anticipated, however all plans will be available for public submission and comment later this year.

Improvements have commenced to both Memorial Park and the Somme Creek area and these will continue into 2008/09.  During the year following a competition a new logo and motto were agreed to by Council.  The logo is being further developed to incorporate the logo 'Simply Beautiful'.

Minutes of Standing Committee and Council meetings are now recorded and available as a record and for public listening at the library.

Once again Bridgetown Has done well with the number of volunteers available in all categories from saving lives and properties to meals on wheels and Henri Nouwen House.  Thank you all.

In my first seven months on Council I and my fellow Councillors have been impressed by the help that we have received from the Council employees whether in administration or elsewhere.  It is pleasing to know that we have a willing team here in Bridgetown.  Thank you

Brian Moore
Shire President
