Somme Creek Parklands Concept Plan

19-12-2006
Somme Creek Parklands Concept Plan (including development of Skate Park) Council has endorsed ‘in-principle’ a draft concept plan for the development of the land known as Somme Creek Parklands (land adjacent to Steere Street between Barlee Street and Bridgetown Swimming Pool) as a recreational/leisure precinct.

The concept plan illustrates the following proposals:

a) Development of the skate park to the design endorsed by the Skate Park Working Group.
b) Construction of small ablution block (2 x unisex toilets) to cater for users of Skate Park and recreational precinct.  Note use of the swimming pool ablutions was considered but has been rejected due to concerns about uncontrolled access to the swimming pool and conflict with users of the pool.
c) Expansion of the Swimming Pool Car Park to cater for the increased parking associated with the Skate Park and recreational precinct.  The concept plan shows the potential to create 75 car parking bays in the expanded car park.
d) The existing skate jumps would be removed upon development of the Skate Park and the concrete pad redeveloped with two half-court basketball courts.  Note access through this area needs to be maintained for chlorine gas deliveries to the rear of the swimming pool and maintenance of the proposed ablution block.
e) Removal of the eucalypt trees adjacent to the existing car park in order to accommodate construction of the proposed skate park and expanded car park.
f) Concrete walkways would be constructed either side of Somme Creek.  The walk way on the northern side of the creek would contain a fitness trail (incorporating fixtures for users to exercise) for which funding is available to purchase and install such equipment.  An additional walkway would connect the skate park with Molyneux Way.
g) An area of approximately 2000m2 would be developed as a grassed area for passive recreation such as kicking a football.
h) Two gazebos would be developed away from the skate park.
i) The balance of the area would be re-vegetated with native parkland vegetation.

In the event of the concept plan being formally endorsed after the consultation period implementation of the plan would occur using a combination of Shire funds and external grant funding. Please click here to view a diagram of the concept plan
